One of the biggest problems in any environment is visibility into SQL queries that are hitting your server. A sudden flurry of complicated queries coming in from a single workstation and your server can be brought to its knees -- and you may never know why.
In the past, dealing with long-running SQL queries required you to install a network analyzer like Wireshark, then dig through the resulting packet data looking for SQL queries. Once you found the query, if you also wanted to know how long it took, you had to then find the corresponding reply packet, then calculate the time difference between the two. Ugh!
This whole process gets a lot easier with Goldstar Software's SQLInterceptor utility. This tool is designed to run on either a workstation or server and watch the network for any requests going to the Pervasive PSQL or Actian Zen database engine (the SRDE). When it sees a request, it can log the important details, such as packet time, length, request type, and more -- even providing the actual SQL query, too! Running from the server, you can see all requests from all users, which is useful if you want to know what queries are adding load to the server at any given time. From the workstation, you can use this to troubleshoot individual applications and see why things are taking longer than you expect them to take.
Only need to monitor successful and failed SQL logins? Check out our LoginMonitor tool instead.
The current release of SQLInterceptor (v1.55) supports native IPv4 and IPv6 networks, IPv6 packets coming through a 6to4 gateway, and Cisco 803.1Q tagging. We will add new protocols as trace data samples become available.
Note: SQLInterceptor uses the open-source library, WinPcap, which must be installed before SQLInterceptor will work. You can download the latest version of this library from http://www.winpcap.org/. Alternatively, you can use the Npcap library, instead, which can be found at https://nmap.org/npcap/.
SQLInterceptor can be purchased as a single-user license or as a LAN site license, which allows you to run it on any number of workstations in your environment. Order online with the links above or contact us for details!
