Pervasive PSQL Vx Server 11 was released on February 9, 2012, and is considered to be the "hypervisor-friendly" version of Pervasive PSQL, designed for virtualization solutions and the cloud infrastructure. Like Pervasive PSQL v11, PSQL Vx is available for Windows and Linux, in both 32-bit and 64-bit levels. PSQL Vx Server 11 shares the same code base as Pervasive PSQL v11, and you should look at that product information page for some of the new improvements added in this version. PSQL Vx differs from PSQLv11 in the following ways:

  • Capacity-Based Licensing: Licenses your engine based on how much work it does, not on a per-user basis.
  • Hypervisor-Friendly: Run your Pervasive databases on virtual machines, taking full advantage of fault tolerance and host load balancing (i.e. vMotion, Live Migration) within your data center, or migrate your data to a public cloud server! This eliminates the need to purchase a second license for fail-over capability on virtualized systems.
  • No Bit Level Distinction: PSQL Vx licenses can be used with either the 32-bit engine or the 64-bit engine. You can change your system to the other bit level as your needs require or as your applications support the new 64-bit platform.
  • Backup Solutions Included: PSQL Vx includes both the VSS Writer and Pervasive Backup Agent v3.1 in the purchase price. Feel at ease knowing that your backup solution will get snapshot backups without intervention!
  • Per-Instance Licensing: The license is tied to the NIC address and Server Name only, so you can make virtual hardware changes (adding memory, CPU's, etc.) on the fly without worry.
  • Internet/Intranet License Included: Since this engine is licensed by capacity, you can run web servers and offer services to the public without worrying about an extra license.

While these changes will simplify the licensing of the database engine for virtual machine users, these changes may also take some getting used to, as the licensing model is completely different from the "classic" edition of PSQLv11. We strongly recommend that you take a few minutes right now to read our License Primer for PSQL Vx to understand these changes.

This edition is now licensed by "capacity", with these primary options:

  • Small: Up to 25 database sessions or 5GB of data
  • Medium: Up to 100 database sessions or 20GB of data
  • Large: Up to 250 database sessions or 50GB of data
  • Unlimited: Unlimited connections and data

Pervasive has created a paper which explains how to estimate your usage based on your current system. You can access Pervasive's explanation of capacity based licensing, or get their Guide for Estimating PSQLVx Capacity.

Beyond these limits, you can increase the capacity of your engine by adding Session Count Increase (SCI) or Data Size Increase (DSI) licenses. These increases are available in several capacities as well:

  • Session Count Increases: Add 10, 25, or 50 sessions to your existing license permanently.
  • Data Size Increases: Add 1GB, 5GB, 10GB, or 50GB to your existing license permanently.
  • Temporary Session Count Increases: Add 10, 25, or 50 sessions to your existing license for 60 days.
  • Temporary Data Size Increases: Add 1GB, 5GB, 10GB, or 50GB to your existing license for 60 days.

The temporary capacity increases provide for a bump in capacity for a short period of time (60 days). This can be useful for increasing the system for the holiday rush or tax season, without needing to purchase a full license for permanent use.

You can download a 30-day TRIAL from Pervasive Software's PSQL Vx Server 11 Web Site now.

Important Note: Windows 2000 is no longer supported in this release! You must have Windows XP or newer. For minimum hardware requirements, check the Pervasive PSQL Vx/v11 Hardware Requirements page for more details.
